Savvy
Cyber Pre-Service Teacher Initiative
In December 2004, the Center for Innovation in Engineering and Science
Education at the Stevens Institute of Technology and CIC hosted a planning
meeting to assess the relevance and feasibility of a joint initiative
to strengthen pre-service teacher education through a faculty development
program. Conference participants tested the use of Internet-based “real
world learning objects.” This model, with the potential to be disseminated
at other colleges of teacher education, has the capability to strengthen
the education of pre-service teachers and build capacity among colleges
of teacher education. The planning conference was attended by mathematics,
science, and teacher education faculty members from 11 CIC institutions.
The outcome of the project is that partners seek to design a possible
national project that will promote effective uses of the Internet in pre-service
training of K-12 teachers. Specifically, this prospective project would
provide professional opportunities for teacher education faculty members
in private colleges and universities to develop and use such materials.

of the Savvy Cyber planning conference is available, complete with details
