Michael C. Maxey

Roanoke College

Michael C. Maxey has served as president of Roanoke College in Virginia since 2007, having previously served Roanoke for 22 years in many capacities, including as vice president for college relations and dean of admissions and financial aid. He previously held positions at the University of New Hampshire, Wake Forest University, and Averett University. Maxey has led Roanoke in a multi-year effort to address the legacies of slavery and racism on campus. The college is a founding member of the international Universities Studying Slavery project and recently announced the Center for Studying Structures of Race, dedicated to studying race and the legacies of slavery. Maxey previously served on the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges board and is past chair of the Network of ELCA Colleges and Universities and the Lutheran Educational Conference of North America. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the CIC Board of Directors.
