Tarshia L. Stanley

Tarshia L. Stanley begins her appointment as provost of Wagner College in June 2022. She is the former dean of the school of humanities, arts, and sciences at St. Catherine University, where she began her service in 2018. While at St. Catherine’s, her work centered around embedding career readiness into liberal arts majors. Previously, she was director of the E.W. Githii Honors Program and chair of English at Spelman College. Stanley’s professional interests include film, media studies, and African American speculative fiction. She has authored several articles on Black women in African, African American, and Caribbean cinema as well as on Black female iconography in American popular culture. She edited The Encyclopedia of Hip Hop Literature (2008) and, most recently, a volume for the Modern Language Association’s teaching series titled Approaches to Teaching the Works of Octavia E. Butler, which won the 2021 Teaching Literature Book Award from Idaho State University.
