From Banned Books to Democratic Disagreement: Courses on Free Expression

April 12–12, 2022

This webinar was produced by the Campus Free Expression Project when it was still part of the Bipartisan Policy Center.

As colleges seek to prepare the next generation to be independent thinkers and engaged citizens, courses on banned books or democratic disagreement stand to bolster students’ ability to engage in dialogue across difference and deepen student understanding of open inquiry and free expression.

Join the Bipartisan Policy Center for a conversation with three professors who teach courses on controversial speech and free expression. Panelists will explore how they designed and led their classes, and what they’ve learned teaching undergraduates about civil dialogue during this polarized moment.

Panelists

David Fine, General Counsel and Secretary to the Board of Trustees, Metropolitan State University of Denver
Kathy M. Newman, Associate Professor of English, Carnegie Mellon University
