Updates from the Workshops for Department and Division Chairs

CIC’s annual Workshops for Department and Division Chairs cater to incoming, new, and experienced chairs of departments or divisions at CIC member institutions. The focus of these workshops is cultivating effective leadership skills and fostering an institution-wide vision within the context of uncertainty and change. The program aims to assist chairs in developing a comprehensive institutional perspective while enhancing crucial skills such as clear and concise communication, strategic thinking, cross-institutional collaboration, and future planning.

The 23rd annual Workshops for Department and Division Chairs took place in Spring 2024. During the first workshop in St. Louis, MO, on April 18–20, 63 participants from across the country convened to acquire new skills, expand their professional network, and offer support to colleagues encountering similar challenges at comparable institutions. The second workshop, held in Baltimore, MD, on May 20–22, welcomed 69 participants, and 29 participants convened in Tacoma, WA, on June 3–5.

Experienced chief academic officers, department chairs, and attorneys with extensive backgrounds in higher education facilitated the workshops. The sessions covered crucial topics, including understanding departmental or divisional budgets, managing difficult conversations, overseeing faculty hiring and evaluation processes, using effective data strategies, and fostering a collegial departmental environment.

The workshops are designed to be engaging and immediately relevant, benefiting participants and their supervisors by strengthening department chairs’ leadership skills and boosting their confidence in their roles. CIC remains steadfast in its commitment to investing in the professional development of our institutional members’ department chairs.
