CIC Offers Support for Philosophy Instructors to Participate in AAPT Teaching Conference (July 2024)

Deadline Extended: July 15, 2024

Logos of the "new Currents in Teaching Philosophy" project, CIC, and the AAPT.

The Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) is pleased to offer travel and participation assistance to philosophy instructors at CIC member institutions who plan to attend the 2024 Workshop-Conference on Teaching Philosophy organized by the American Association of Philosophy Teachers (AAPT). The conference will meet at Otterbein University (Westerville, OH) on July 24–28, 2024.

A limited number of grant awards are available. The awards will be paid as reimbursements following the conference. They are intended to help defray the costs of AAPT membership, conference registration, lodging, meals, and travel. Applications will be considered in the order they are received by CIC. Applications will close on July 15, 2024.

The AAPT is a collegial community of engaged teacher-scholars dedicated to sharing ideas, experiences, and advice about teaching philosophy, and to the support and encouragement of both new and experienced philosophy teachers. Visit the AAPT website to learn more about the 2024 conference or to register. Applicants for CIC awards are encouraged but not required to register for the AAPT conference first.

The CIC awards are generously supported by a grant from the Mellon Foundation.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants must be an instructor in philosophy (or a cognate discipline) with at least a half-time teaching appointment in 2024–2025 at a CIC institutional or international member.
  • A limited number of awards are also available for graduate students in philosophy at CIC member institutions, with a preference for students who are pursuing a doctorate in the discipline. Graduate students should contact Philip M. Katz (pkatz@cic.edu) before submitting an application.

Awards:

  • The maximum award for most recipients will be $1,000.
  • For recipients who live within a reasonable driving distance of Westerville, OH, the maximum award will be $750. For these purposes, “reasonable driving distance” is defined as 125 miles or less, as determined by Google Maps or another standard mapping program.
  • Awards will be issued as reimbursements following the conference. Recipients will be required to submit receipts for AAPT membership and conference fees, travel costs, lodging, and meals.

How to Apply:

  • Please complete the online application form. You will be asked to provide the link to a faculty listing or bio on your institution’s website and/or upload a copy of your curriculum vitae.
  • You will be notified about the status of your application within two weeks of submission.
