Dan Porterfield has had an extensive career in public service and has been recognized as a visionary strategist, transformational leader, devoted educator, and passionate advocate for justice and opportunity. As president and CEO of the Aspen Institute, a global nonprofit organization, think tank, and research institute in fields such as business and society; energy and environment; justice and civic identity; and education, Porterfield brings both the policy and practice perspectives to the discussion on the strengths and challenges of independent higher education.
Prior to leading the Aspen Institute, Porterfield served for seven years as the president of Franklin & Marshall College. Under his leadership, Franklin & Marshall set records for applications, fundraising, and fellowships; developed cutting edge new centers for student wellness, career services, and faculty excellence; and constructed a new athletics stadium and visual arts center. Porterfield holds a BA from Georgetown University and a MA from Hertford College, Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar. He earned a PhD at the City University of New York Graduate Center.
