Tarshia Stanley began her appointment as provost and vice president for academic affairs at Wagner College (NY) in June 2022. Stanley came to Wagner after serving as dean of the school of humanities, arts, and sciences at St. Catherine University (MN) for four years. Her work at St. Catherine centered around embedding career readiness into liberal arts majors. Prior to 2018, Stanley was director of the E.W. Githii Honors Program and English department chair at Spelman College (GA). Her professional interests include film, media studies, and African American speculative fiction. She has published articles on Black women in African, African American, and Caribbean cinema and on Black female iconography in American popular culture. Stanley also is editor of The Encyclopedia of Hip Hop Literature (2008) and, most recently, a volume for the MLA’s teaching series titled Approaches to Teaching the Works of Octavia Butler, which won the 2021 Teaching Literature Book Award from Idaho State University (ID).
