With public confidence in higher education at rock bottom, politicians are taking steps to restrict campus governance and academic freedom. Meanwhile, politically motivated alumni and donors are pressuring presidents to make changes that could give a partisan cast to campus activities. Presidents must defend against state and federal government overreach, respond to alumni and donor demands, and make the case for higher education to a skeptical public. With lessons for all CIC institutions, presidents of three faith-based universities describe how they’ve drawn on their campuses’ credal missions to meet these challenges.
