Growing as a College/University Leader

Department chairs and deans occupy a pivotal role in the administrative structure of a college or university. The job often has been described as “leading from the middle.” What constitutes effective leadership? What are the potential challenges in the role of a leader? How can chairs and deans influence faculty colleagues within and beyond their academic units? How do they develop a wider vision and understanding of institution-wide initiatives in which they might assume a leadership role? What campus resources can they tap to develop an institutional perspective? How can campus governance be a vehicle for this development? How can a chair or dean locate a mentor? Participants will learn how to identify opportunities to grow in their leadership roles.
