This presentation will explore the critical lessons learned by Presbyterian College and Mars Hill University, smaller colleges with limited resources in the upstate of South Carolina and the mountains of Western North Carolina, in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. We will discuss the unexpected hurdles encountered; innovative solutions developed for communication, student support, service to the community; and the crucial role of partnerships across campus areas and with local emergency management. While the effects of this event are particular to these institutions and the region, their experiences navigating the challenges of disaster preparedness, response, and recovery offered unique insights that may be beneficial regardless of disaster event type or area. This program aims to share actionable takeaways for other small institutions, emphasizing the importance of adaptable planning, resilient infrastructure, and fostering strong internal and external networks in the face of unforeseen crises.
