Everyone agrees that collaboration is important, yet too often it depends on chance conversations, personal relationships, or simply being in the right place at the right time. This presentation examines the shift from collaboration by circumstance to collaboration by design. Drawing on practical experiences from two different universities, we will share lessons learned, highlight common pitfalls, and introduce intentional approaches that have strengthened coordination across multiple areas of our institutions. Rather than focusing on theory alone, the session offers practical ideas that academic leaders can adapt to create more consistent communication, stronger partnerships, and better institutional outcomes.
The session is designed to equip participants with practical models for promoting communication, strengthening coordination, and sustaining effective collaboration. Participants will also be encouraged to consider how more intentional structures and practices might support greater alignment and shared responsibility within their own institutions.
