What are the strategies that experienced chairs employ to build and maintain an inclusive atmosphere within a department or division? What lessons have they learned about working with their colleagues, students, and staff members toward departmental goals? How can chairs encourage diverse points of view and respect for all department or division members? What is inclusive excellence and how can a department/division chair use it as a framework for gauging progress towards an inclusive department/division? Participants will explore these questions with an experienced administrator and learn from other participants about how they have handled different types of situations. They will also learn about the key concepts of diversity, equity, inclusion, cultural competence, and full participation; and how to create a departmental infrastructure of full participation with the dimensions of change and innovation. Finally, the session will focus on ways to create transformational change that is enduring.
