When Leadership Comes at a Cost: Rethinking Faculty-to-Administrator Transitions

November 8, 2026

This session examines the opportunities and hidden costs associated with faculty transitions into administrative leadership. Participants will discuss strategies for aligning administrative assignments with promotion and tenure expectations, equitably distributing institutional service, defining faculty leadership roles with appropriate authority and support, and creating pathways for faculty administrators to return to teaching and scholarship. The session also considers how institutions can recognize faculty leadership as substantive academic labor while protecting student learning, faculty career mobility, and long-term institutional vitality.
