CIC’s Independent newsletter, published since 1956, includes information on CIC’s recent and upcoming programs and services as well as a column on higher education issues, news briefs on higher education research, and news highlights from member institutions. The newsletter is published four times a year. The fall and spring issues are released in both print and online formats; two additional issues—featuring special coverage of CIC’s annual Presidents Institute and Institute for Chief Academic Officers—are online exclusives.

Special Edition: CIC 2024–2025 Institutes
The Winter 2025 edition features updates about CIC programs and offerings and highlights from the 2025 Presidents Institute and the 2024 Institute for Chief Academic Officers. We have also included exciting updates from some of our members about new programs, majors, scholarships, and fall enrollment goals.

The Summer 2024 edition features highlights and updates from new CIC initiatives like the Campus Free Expression Project and the Consortium for Work-Based Learning; networks such as NetVUE, AI Ready, and Belong; and summer leadership development programs. We have also included exciting updates from some of our members as they launch new majors and programs this fall.

Special Edition: CIC 2022–2023 Institutes
The winter 2023 edition covers the CIC’s 2022 Institute for Chief Academic Officers with Chief Financial and Chief Enrollment Officers and the 2023 Presidents Institute.
The summer 2022 edition features coverage of CIC’s new set of strategic focus areas to guide future decision making and programming and the results of a member engagement survey.
The spring 2022 edition features coverage of CIC’s leadership development programs and the 2022 Network for Vocation in Undergraduate Education (NetVUE) Conference.
Special Edition: CIC 2021–2022 Institutes
In the fall and winter of 2021–2022, CIC gathered the leaders of independent colleges and universities to discuss the most relevant and challenging issues facing higher education. Presidents, chief academic officers, chief student affairs officers, chief diversity officers, and a wide range of expert presenters gathered at CIC’s annual Institutes.
The fall 2021 edition features a special report on CIC’s new president, Marjorie Hass; stories on CIC’s upcoming activities and programs; a useful summary of Research and Books related to higher education; and a Campus Update section full of news from member colleges and universities.
