Upcoming Opportunity
Join (at no cost!) a Scriptural Reasoning Hub Near You
NetVUE is offering faculty members and staff new opportunities to engage Scriptural Reasoning (SR) as a practice to aid students’ exploration of vocation. SR hubs will take place in May and June this year at four locations: Campbell University (NC), Butler University (IN), St. Edward’s University (TX), and Pacific Lutheran University (WA). Accommodation, meals, and program costs are fully covered by NetVUE. Nearly 50 individuals have already registered, and some hubs are likely to fill to capacity soon. The gatherings take place over three days and two nights. Participants will have an opportunity to study in small groups with experienced practitioners and will receive detailed guidance on how to host and lead SR sessions with undergraduate students.

These hubs will explore Scriptural Reasoning as an opportunity to foster collaboration between faculty members and staff, as well as to assess the practice as a means of engaging first-generation students. It is well recognized that many students need encouragement to practice forms of reading that are attentive to detail: Scriptural Reasoning embodies ways of slowing down the process of reading, of being attentive to others’ interpretations, and of entertaining multiple perspectives while finding one’s own voice. Scriptural Reasoning has proven effective in helping develop fluency in communication across cultural differences.
The hub programs include practice sessions, discussions around timetabling and embedding Scriptural Reasoning into existing curricula or programs, identifying local opportunities, and making a persuasive case (given constraints on time and resources) for the value of interreligious textual study. Previous training hubs have shown that SR can be especially generative for classes where students need to master reading attentively, for the work of chaplaincy and campus ministry, and for vocational exploration in situations where students seek to locate themselves within a tradition without having to represent or defend it. This can be especially important for students who see themselves as living on the margins of their college communities. The focus is always on texts, on possibilities for interpretation, and on attentiveness both to the text and to other participants’ contributions.
NetVUE institutions are encouraged to participate in the training hubs in small teams of two or three, especially where faculty members and staff plan to work together. After the hubs, NetVUE staff members will be available to offer support and advice for participants who are seeking to develop Scriptural Reasoning further on their campuses. There is no cost to participate, and small travel grants are available for teams who need this support.
