Educators do not typically discuss assessment and equity-based project design in conjunction with vocational discernment. Some may worry that assessment will limit the work of discernment by making it transactional, reducing it to a series of simple, measurable data points. Similarly, faculty members may have problems seeing vocational discernment as a vehicle for equity-based teaching. Moreover, equity-minded project design can seem daunting to educators, given the prevalence of systemic inequities.

At this NetVUE regional gathering, participants will discuss the design and assessment of vocational exploration projects based on equity-based teaching practices. Leaders will suggest that vocational exploration and discernment can be used as the wider discursive framework that naturally connects equity-based teaching strategies to assessment. On the one hand, reflection and discernment require providing opportunities for meaning-making and success to all students, regardless of their particular backgrounds. On the other hand, purposeful learning necessitates data-driven teaching and consistent improvement. Participants will reflect on designing and implementing equity-based and accessible curricular and co-curricular projects that promote vocational discernment.
